David Cullinane, Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, has slammed the latest figures from the HSE on staff recruitment and impatient beds in University Hospital Waterford.

Deputy Cullinane said: "The HSE has confirmed to me that 10 Inpatient beds were closed in January this year at University Hospital, Waterford’s due to management's inability to recruit sufficient Nursing staff. These bed closures commenced at the end of October,2016.

"To date only four beds have reopened, with the remaining six subject to staff recruitment. The HSE have also confirmed to me in writing that the numbers of patients on trolleys at UHW has increased from 441 for that month of January in 2016 to 530 in 2017.

"Once again we see problems with capacity at University Hospital Waterford linked to either a failure or refusal to hire staff. It is hard not to surmise at this stage that the HSE and the Department are engaged in a policy of disinvestment in relation to University Hospital Waterford.

"We need a change not only of government but of policy."
