Save Kilmeaden Post Office - Mary Butler TD

A meeting was held on Saturday last at 6.30 pm by the Committee to discuss our next steps further to correspondece from An Post stating that "An Post has now decided to close the Post Office on a temporary basis subject to a strategic review of the national Post Office network currently ongoing.

"This will mean the closure of the office and we are currently talking to the postmaster with a view to working out a formal date and making arrangements for customers who have been using Kilmeaden Post Office. I will let you know those details once they have been finalised."

Deputy Mary Butler FF said: "We were informed of the decision by Angus Laverty, Public Affairs Manager An Post. On hearing the news the current Postmaster who had tendered his resignation as Postmaster in Kilmeaden after 17 years formally withdrew his resignation on Friday the 29th as he felt that he was being made a scapegoat by An Post. The committee and the Postmaster currently await a reply from An Post in relation to this. The committee has learned that approx. 10 Post Offices are "temporary closed " awaiting the completion of the national review. The committee also feels that An Post used the opportunity of the changeover in ownership of the local Centra and the Post Office as a cynical move and opportunity to close the Post Office. "This decision will remove a central community hub from the village and is a clear example of the further demise of Rural Communities.

Please support the various attempts by the committee to raise awareness, please support the Post Office with your custom and please like and share the Save Kilmeaden Post Office Facebook page which is online.

Many thanks to the owners and staff of The Sweep Inn who facilitate our meetings and look after us so well.

An Post has now decided to close the Post Office on a temporary basis subject to the a strategic review of the national post office network currently ongoing.

This will mean the closure of the office and we are currently talking to the postmaster with a view to working out a formal date and making arrangements for customers who have been using the Kilmeaden office. I will let you know those details once they have been finalised.

I appreciate this news will not be what you would have wished but hope that you appreciate that given the current review and the pressures facing both the company and the network it is the best possible decision.

Perfidious AlbionThe recent statement by the UK’s Brexit Minister responsible for their leaving the European Union David Davis really threw a spanner in the political works last week. His remark that the joint text agreed between the UK and the EU concerning a soft Brexit for Ireland was more a statement of intent rather than the legal enforceable international agreement between both parties caused consternation in Europe and Ireland.Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney was quick to …
