Blues Again Set To Welcome Old Foes

Having fallen foul of the sudden blizzard conditions on Suirside last week, Waterford United's first competitive tie against Cobh Ramblers in over five years is set for this Tuesday night at the RSC (KO 7.45pm).

The sides last met in the Munster Senior Cup in February 2008, with Cobh winning out 8-7 in a marathon penalty shoot-out, and it's been a further year since their last meeting in this competition, which threw the teams together with regularity over the '90s and noughties, with Ramblers again taking the tie by the odd goal in three in May of 2007.

In fact, though the surprisingly short League head-to-head record (the teams missed each other 15 of Cobh's 24 seasons between election and dropping to the 'A' Championship) comes out overwhelmingly in the Suirsiders' favour, Cup matches, the League Cup in particular, have been very much Ramblers forte.

The Blues go into the game still smarting from a 2-1 loss at Longford Town, a match where they were left rueing missed chances, particularly one early and one late, which might have changed the complexion of the game. Added to the concession of a late equaliser in their opening game, and it has been an unsatisfactory start for United in terms of results, if not performance. Cobh, on the other hand, followed a spectacular opening thrashing of Wexford Youths with an almost as emphatic reverse at Finn Harps at the weekend, and so their early season form has still to be decided.

With no suspensions in place, Blues boss Paul O'Brien only has worries over Michael Coady (groin) and Dylan Mernagh (illness), apart from long-term injury absentee Peter Keegan. Peter White returned from flu to play a part in the Longford game, and Jack Doherty and Kevin O'Connor are also available again after international duty with the Ireland Schools team.

The Missing List:

Suspensions: None.

Injury: Peter Keegan (knee) - out; Michael Coady (groin) - doubt; Dylan Mernagh (illness) - doubt

The Winter OlympicsAlthough Ireland has more than it's fair share of athletes competing in the forthcoming Winter Olympics in PyeongChang in South Korea there will be very few people in the country who will be disappointed if they don't come back with a slew of medals. For a country that goes into meltdown when we get some few inches of snow every decade or so it's even amazing that we've got any athletes going to the Winter Olympics at all!The Winter Olympics just really aren't our thing, we're n …
