Thomas back with a comfortable win

At the AAI Games in Santry Stadum on Sunday last Olympian Thomas Barr Ferrybank won his first 400 metres hurdle race of the season comfortably in 51.23 seconds, his club mate Ben Kiely was second in 53.24. Kelly Proper making a welcome return to athletics after almost three years finished second in the 200 metres in 24.43 outside her best but still a very good time considering her absence,the race being won by Phil Healy from Bandon in a very fast 23.13 but over the wind limit, other Ferrybank athletes competing were Paul Murphy who was a very good second in the 400 metres in 48.79 seconds and Emily Nolan was 6 th in the 400 metres.

University Match

A number of athletes who compete with Waterford clubs were on the Irish University team that met the Scottish Universities in a match in Glasgow last week end. Grace Furlong who competes with Waterford AC and is in UCC won the triple jump and Cian O’Brien also from Waterford AC who is at WIT was third in the high jump

All Ireland Combined Events

On Saturday last three athletes from Waterford won medals at the All Ireland Combined Events in Morton Stadium in Santry. In the under 15 age group Katie Nolke Ferrybank was second and in the Master’s Tom O’Brien Waterford retained his over 50 title and beat his own record in the process while Nichola Hayes from the same club won the over 40 title.

County Championships

Sunday last was the final day of the County Track and Field Championships in the RSC and there were winners from Waterford, Ferrybank,Tramore, KCK, West Waterford and Finisk Valley.Several athletes won more than one title each and those to catch the eye were Paula and David Igwe and Annabelle Walsh, Ferrybank, Emily O’Mahony, Muireann Duffin, Aidan Burke,Sarah Jacob Waterford, Dara O’Neill, Zac O’Sullivan Tramore, Ronan O’Hoara, Senan Devine and Niamh Mc Grath KCK, Ben Qualter, Lucy Holmes and Cian O’Riordan West Waterford and Eddie Raicevic and Lucy Nugent Finisk Valley .

Touraneena 5 KM

200 runners and 100 walkers took part in the 23 rd Annual Touraneena 5 km last Friday evening and the run was won by Raivis Zakis in 16 minutes 15 seconds. Cian O’Riordan was second in 16.38 both West Waterford and Fkadu Kebede Kilmacthomas was third in16.49, first local Colm Ryan. First lady home was Sally Forristal St Joseph’s in 18.39,Madeline Loughnane Thurles Crokes was second in18.50 and Sylvia Malone Waterford was third19.37. First local Gillian Whelan.The category winners were as follows;Women F35 Gillian Whelan Touraneena Road Runners,F40 Deirdre O’Sullivan (Ind),F45 Nicola Maunsell Clonmel, F50 Onra Power West Waterford, F55 Bernie Prendergast do junior Emma Mc Cormack (Ind. Men; M40 Dermot Ryan West Waterford,M55 Yev Chizhikov do, M50 Ray Hahesy do, M55 Denis Mc Carthy East Cork,M 60 Joe Gough West Waterford, junior Tony Dwyer (Ind).The Anne Powerr Memorial Shield in the walk was won by Anna Whelan.

All Ireland Schools Finals on Saturday

The big event of the track and field season for athletes from Secondary Schools is on Saturday next in Tullamore.Its the Irish Life Health All Ireland Schools track and field finals and many athletes boys and girls from Waterford schools will be competing in three grades junior,intermediate and senior with quite a few fancied for titles.a very long day of competition will get under way at 9 am,full timetable is on Irish Schools Athletics website.

Munster Fixture

On Saturday and Sunday next the Munster under 9 to under 13 Championships are in Ennis and lots of athletes from Waterford clubs will compete,the first event both days will begin at 11 am full timetable is on Munster Athletics website On Saturday week the under 9 to 11 team games are in Castleisland and on Sunday week at the same venue the Munster Senior and Master’s Championships go ahead

Carrick on Suir Road Race .

On Friday next at 7.30 pm the 3rd race in the Outfield Sports Series will be the Deadman’s 5 miles in Carrick on Suir.The sponsor on the night is Haven Lannen Pharmacy Lannens.Entries will be taken from 6.30 pm

More Road Races.

On Friday June 8 th the14 th Annual Old Still Bar 5 Miles is in Clashmore at 7.30 pm another in the Intersport Elvery’s/Asics series. Sunday June 10th is the date for the Little South Run in Kilmacow over 4 miles and it starts at 2 pm..

The mother and six of her children had to seek accommodation in the Tallaght Garda Station last week as they had absolutely nowhere to turn to.
