Fast times at RSC for Tón Le Gaoithe Sprints meeting

On Saturday last at the RSC some of Ireland's finest athletes competed at the 4th Annual Tón Le Gaoithe Winds Sprint meeting including current National Champions. The athletes came from all over the thirty two counties in their droves with huge entries in all the100 and 200 metres with the men having 7 races in all. Phil Healy Bandon the champion over 200 metres a student at WIT ran the fastest time ever for an Irish woman over 100 metres her time being 11,16 but due to the wind being outside the permitted speed it will not go into the record books.Current Champions to win at the meeting were Sarah Lavin UCD in 100 m hurdles in a thriller, Stephen Rice Clonliffe Hrs in the javelin with 64 metres plus and Grace Casey Eire Og also in the javelin with 40.06 metres just in front of Órlaith O'Brien Waterford on 39.73. Cian O'Brien Waterford was second in the high jump Other athletes from the locality to compete and do quite well were Niamh Whelan, Katie Murphy,Emily Nolan,Craig Mc Auliffe and Anthony Mc Cauley, Ferrybank, Eoin Kenny and James Murphy from Waterford.

East Munster Girls Schools Championships Results

Athletes from Waterford Schools had many successes at the East Munster Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships at the RSC on Wednesday last..The following had doubles;Katie Murphy Abbey Community College in the senior 100 and 200 m, Lorna Monahan Waterpark in the senior 400 m and triple jump,Lucy Holmes Ard Scoil na n Deise intermediate 800 and 1500 metres, Emily O'Mahony St Augustine's intermediate long and triple jump and Katie Nolke Ursuline junior long and high jump while Una O'Brien Waterpark set a new record in winning the under 16 mile.The other winners were as follows; Senior 3000m walk Órla O'Connor Waterpark,pole vault Aoife Lai St Augustine's,100 m hurdles Samantha Foley Newtown School, Steeple Chase Sinead O'Brien Ard Scoil na nDeise, at intermediate level steeplechase Aoife Allen Mercy Convent,3000m Aoife Casey do, discus Sarah Jacob Ursuline,javelin Kira Kelly Waterpark,at Junior level 100 m hurdles Paula Igwe Ursuline,1200 m Walk Meadbh O'Connor Waterpark, shot putt Sarah Heery do, discus Julia Kelly St Pauls, javelin Sarah Slevin Ard Scoil na nDeise,hammer Maeve Griffin Blackwater CS, relay Ursuline. minor 100m Lauren Shiels Ursuline

Tom Jordan Memorial Run Report

158 competed in the 10 th Annual O'Neills Pharmacy Tom Jordan Memorial Road Race in Portlaw last Friday evening over 5 miles and Niall Shiel St Killian's Wexford was the very comfortable winner in 26 minutes 16 seconds, Derek Walsh Carrick on Suir was second in 27.15 and Fkadu Kebede was third in 27.49 .First lady home was Jacqui Carthy Kilmore Co Wexford in 29.53,Madeline Loughnane Thurles Crokes was second in 30.18 and Louise Morgan Ferrybank was third in 31.11 It was race 2 of the Outfield Sports Series and the Proceeds go to Portlaw Red Cross. It was race 2 of the Outfield Sports Series and was very well organised and stewarded.

County Championships begin on Sunday

The County Track and Field Championships begin on Sunday next at the RSC with the first event on the main programme at 11 am. On the track the first events are the 400 metres hurdles men and women junior (u19 and u 20) and senior followed by the 300 metres youths male and female (u17 and u18) and 250 metres u 15 and u 16 male and female these will be followed by all the sprints starting with the girls u 9. The order for long jumps and turbo javelin are as follows; Long Jump Boys pit 1 ( Finish line side ) U12,U11,U10,U,.Long Jump Girls pit 2 ( Start line side ) U9,U10,U11,U12. Turbo Jav Boys ( High jump area) U9,U10,U11,U12.Turbo Jav Girls ( Lower Javelin runway near city ) U12,U11,U10,U9. Athletes must compete in their own age group except in relays where they can move up one age and there are no mixed relays.There are minimum starting heights for all high jumps under 12 up to senior which all clubs have. Lots of help from all clubs required on the day.Full programme is with all clubs for weeks and if you are a coach in a club and didn't get one ask your secretary or chairperson to provide you with one.

Road Races on Friday next

On Friday next two road races take place in the county. Starting at 7 pm is the Annual Splashworld 10 km in Tramore with entries online presently on total timing or in Splashworld from 6.00pm on Friday and in Ardmore at 7.30 pm another race in the Intersport Elvery's/Asics series takes place.Its the 23 Annual An Tobar Bar over 5 miles, entries in Ardmore GAA Centre from 6.15 pm.

East Munster Boys Championships

On this Thursday with an 11.30 am start in Templemore County Tipperary the East Munster Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships are on. Many athletes from Waterford schools will participate in four grades minor,junior,intermediate and senior.

Road Races

A reminder of the annual WLRFM Viking Marathon ,Half Marathon and Qtr Marathon coming up on Saturday June 30 th at 9 am,see website. An August fixture is the Balyduff Lower Annual 5 Miles on Friday August 10 th

Thomas Barr's season begins soon

Olympian Thomas Barr expects to be starting his season with two races in England within two days. First up is Manchester on May 18th and then Loughboro on May 20 th.
