Fantastic win by Órla in Czech Republic

On Saturday last in Podebrady Czech Republic at an International Race Walking meeting Órla O'Connor Waterford AC won a 10 KM walk beating 26 other athletes from all over Europe in the process and even better still had a personal best time of 49.23 seconds ,the only athlete in the race to be inside 50 minutes.She worked her way through the field in the last thousand metres and won going away from Yekaterina Shlykova of Kasakhstan timed at 50.15 a national record with Julia Richter Germany third in 50.35.and seventeen in the field recorded season's best times. Into the bargain another Irish walker Niamh O'Connor Newbridge was 8 th and this enabled Ireland win the team award. Last year Órla competed in the same event and finished 21 st in 51 minutes 39 seconds so a major step forward for her.She competes in the European Junior Championships Also in Podebrady last Saturday Kate Veale West Waterford competed in the 20 km race and finished 29 th in one hour 46 minutes and 17 seconds and was disappointed with both her placing and time.

All Ireland Juvenile Victories

Athlone IT was the venue on Saturday last for the re scheduled Irish Life Health All Ireland Juvenile Indoor Championships Section 1 and there were a small number of athletes from Waterford Clubs competing and they did well. For Ferrybank AC the girls under 19 team won the Relay, it was comprised of Katie Murphy, Lorna Monaghan, Zoe Kiely and Aoife Redmond and Katie Nolke also from Ferrybank was third in the under 15 long jump. For Waterford AC Shane Cawley won the under 17 shot putt with 13.26 metres and for West Waterford Kate Killigrew was joint first in the under 16 pole vault with 2.25 metres

Ferrybank Sports

There was a record entry from many parts of Ireland for the McDonald's Ferrybank Open Sports at the RSC on Sunday last in ideal weather and athletes from Waterford Clubs were very prominent. The mile senior races for men and women were both won by athletes from Ferrybank AC Andrew Connick and Molly Hutchinson. Two young middle distance athletes from Waterford AC impressed with wins over 800 metres Aidan Burke under 16 and Matteo Mary under 17. Other Waterford clubs also got among the medals while United Striders won the Trophy for the Best Juvenile Club by just one point over Carrick on Suir.

Spring Throws

Órlaith O'Brien Waterford AC won the senior 600 g Javelin in Templemore on Sunday last at the Spring Throws meeting with a throw of 43.66 metres and Cormac Farrell from the same club was third in the 5 kg Hammer throw.

Ballinroad 4 Miles

235 finished the 5 th Annual MTS Media Ballinroad 5 km run last Friday evening and first home was Noel Murphy Waterford AC in 16 minutes 15 seconds,Ravis Zakis West Waterford was second in 16.17 and Kevin O'Leary East Cork was third in 16.25. First lady home was Sally Forristal St Joseph's in 18.03, Madeline Loughnane Thurles Crokes was second in 19.11 and Louise Morgan Ferrybank was third in 19.38. It was race 1 in the Intersportst Elvery's/Asics Series.

Irish University Track and Field Championships

On Friday and Saturday next the Irish University Track and Field Championships are in Queens University Belfast and a number of athletes from Waterford will compete with various Universities and Institutes's of Technology. The programme begins on Friday at 2 pm and on Saturday at 9.30 pm,full time table on Irish University Athletics Website.

35 th Annual Butlerstown SE2 4 miles on Friday

On the calendar since 1984 the Annual SE2 Butlerstown 4 miles Road Race is on Friday next at 7 pm with entries in Butlerstown GAA Centre, Holy Cross, Old Warterford to Cork Road from 5 .45 pm. a number of those that competed in the first year are running raising funds for a Defibrillator for the Butlerstown Community. People like Pat Hennessy, Francie Lonergan, Sykie Power to mention but a few are seeking sponsorship. The event is Race 2 of the Intersport Elvery's/Asics Series.Refreshments and prize giving in Holy Cross Lounge afterwards
