National Athletic Championships at WIT arena a huge success

On Sunday last the Irish Life Health National X Country Championship fixture organised by Waterford Ac in association with Athletics Ireland held at WIT Arena in Carriganore in ideal weather conditions was a resounding success. Over 2000 athletes as well as around four thousand spectators from all over the 32 counties were present to witness an absolute brilliant day of athletics with 12 championships decided, some with thrilling finishes and some with clear cut winners also and the fixture was run off very smoothly on an ideal course for both competitors and spectators..

Good Waterford performances

While there was no individual Waterford winner there were nevertheless some fine Waterford performances. With approximately 200 athletes in each event and the first twelve in each getting medals a number of Waterford athletes secured medals.Caoimhe Prendergast West Waterford was 7 th under 13, three had 9 th placings and these were Isobelle Cummins Ferrybank u 17, Miceál Power West Waterford u 19, Tommy Fennell do under 15 ,twins Órla and Anna O'Connor Waterford were 10 th and 11 th u 19 and Hugo Blair Waterford was 12 th u 19. Other very good performances came from Ruth Heery Waterford 14 th u 19, Dermot Cummins West Waterford 16 th Novice, Rory Fennell do 20 th u 15, David Gaffney do 22 nd u 11, Onra Murray Ferrybank 23 rd Novice, Conor Shiels Waterford 24 th u 19, Sarah Abullo do 24 th u 11, David , Nyhan West Waterford 25 th u 11, Aidan Burke Waterford 27 th u 15 ,Emily Goff Ferrybank 27 th u 19, Oisin O'Riordan West Waterford 29th u 15 and Brian Scanlon Finnisk Valley 30 th u 11.

In the inter club team section u 19 Waterford AC girls were second the team being Órla and Anna O'Connor and Ruth Heery and these three with Emily Goff Ferrybank made up the Waterford County team that were second also. West Waterford AC were second club in the boys u 15 the members being twins Tommy and Rory Fennell,Oisin O'Riordan and Asier Del Rio. A young girl with strong Waterford connections running for Lucan in Dublin Saoirse Fitzgerald finished second overall under 11,she is daughter of former local runner Eoin Fitzgerald Butlerstown and niece of Elaine Fitzgerald former International X country runner. Neighbouring club in Sth Kilkenny St Senan's had two young under 11 athletes placed 5 th and 7 th u 11,Eva Dunphy and Charlotte Carpendale. Well done to all in Waterford AC and other clubs in the county and from neighbouring St Senan's who helped out with the stewarding at the event and the laying out of the course on Saturday. Bula Bas to the Management and staff at WIT Arena for pulling out all the stops also, thanks to the Order of Malta.The facilities,course etc was very well received by visiting officials, athletes and supporters,roll on more National fixtures to the venue,already booked in 2018 are the East Munster Schools X Country Championships February 9th, the Munster X Country Secondary Schools finals Feb 23rd and the All Ireland Secondary Schools X Country finals March 10th.

New Year Indoor Meetings in January.

On Saturday and Sunday January 6 th and 7 th 2018 the Munster junior and under 23 Pentathlon Championships will be in Nenagh starting both days 10.30 am and on Sunday January 14, 2018 also in Nenagh the Munster Senior and Master's Championships start at 10 am, Saturday 20 th All Ireland Combined Events all age groups Athlone. Sunday 21st Munster Juvenile Relay Championships Nenagh.Sunday 28th All Ireland junior and under 23 Championships Athlone.

Cross Country in January 2018

Saturday 6 th Antrim International X Country and Celtic International Greenmount Antrim. Matteo Mary from Waterford AC has been selected on the Boys u 17 Development Squad for this fixture. Friday January 26 th Waterford Secondary Schools X Country Championships St Augustine's College Grounds Abbeyside.
