Four All Ireland Juvenile titles won

On Saturday and Sunday last in Tullamore the first two days of the Irish Life Health All Ireland under 13 to 19 Track and Field Championships were held with a sizeable entry from Waterford and there were four local winners as well as second and third placings also. The winners are all very consistent young athletes and with a Championship best performance Shane Monagle Tramore set the standard continuing his very successful season by easily winning the under 18 110 metres hurdles in a very good time of 14.18 seconds. Two Waterford AC athletes in top form also this season both won under 18 titles James Murphy the long jump with 6.38 metres and Órla O'Connor easily won the u 18 3000 metres walk in 14 minutes3.21 seconds..The fourth winner came from Ferrybank and Katie Nolke again a model of consistency won the under 14 high jump with 1.53 metres and was just pipped in the long jump being second with 4.96 metres a personal best,the event was won with 4.99 metres. Other silver medallists were Clare Caulfield Waterford AC 2000 metres walk u 15 and Kate Killigrew West Waterford pole vault u 15, Bronze medal winners were as follows ;Ruth Heery u 18 walk, Méabh O'Connor u 14 walk ,Kathleen Heery u 19 discus,Emily O'Mahony u 17 triple jump, Sarah Heery u 14 discus all Waterford AC, Niall Blackwell West Waterford u 19 3000 metres, Una O'Brien u16 3000 metres with a personal best, Mark Hartery under 18 long jump both Tramore and from Waterford AC brothers Andrew Scanlon u12 shot putt and David Scanlon u 13 high jump.

Rathgormack 5 Miles

63 competed in the Auto Power 5 miles road race in Rathgormack last Friday evening and Noel Murphy Waterford won it in 27 minutes and 4 seconds after leading all the way, Ailbe Coughlan Crusaders was second in 27 28 and Derek Walsh Carrick on Suir was third in 27.55. First lady home was Kate Veale West Waterford in 33.04, Mary Molloy was second in 36.20 and Elaine Horgan was third in 36.41 both Clonmel. It was race 4 of the Outfield Sports Series and as usual very well organised by Carrick on Suir Road Runners.

Thomas Barr

Olympian Thomas Barr was due to compete in the Diamond League meeting in London on Sunday last and also in the Morton Games this Wednesday but misses both. He has had a hamstring problem-not too serious -but will be back for his next race at the National Championships on July 22 nd. Niamh Whelan ran in a 100 metres race in Lausanne in Switzerland last week and finished third in 11.63 seconds. Kevin Cooper won the 37 th Annual Little Compton Rhode Island USA 4.8 miles Road Race on Saturday last.The European under 23 Championships begin in Bydgoszcz Poland on Thursday July 13 th and will on there until July 16, Barry Keane Waterford AC is on the Irish team, he runs on Saturday evening in the 5000 metres.

Schools International

On Saturday next the Schools International Track and Field meeting is in Morton Stadium in Santry in Dublin and Patrick Fitzgerald St Augustine's College is on the Irish team in the pole vault, competition begins at 10.35 am. Another fixture on Saturday is the All Ireland B Juvenile Championships in Tullamore and they begin at 1 pm.

All Ireland Juvenile Day 3

The final day of the Irish Life Health All Ireland under 13 to 19 Championships is Sunday next in Tullamore and again many athletes from Waterford clubs will be competing, this fixture starts at 10 am.

Cork City Sports

On Tuesday July 18 th The Cork City International Sports at Cork IT Track will have a star studded entry and a small number of Waterford athletes will be there and some will also run this Wednesday in the Morton Games in Dublin.

Saturday Sunday 22 nd 12.15 pm and 23 rd 2.15 pm Irish Senior Championships Morton Stadium, Dublin, Saturday 29 th Munster B Juvenile Championship Templemore 1 pm.

Race off

The Alan Everett Memorial 5 miles Road Race race scheduled for Woodstown on Friday next is cancelled.
