mervue united 2 - 1 waterford united

Waterford United turned in a rather harmless display in Fahy's Field on Friday night and as a result they lost to Mervue United for the 4th time in a row and the result saw them slip to third bottom from the second tier league. This was as bad as it gets for the local side and this defeat was hard to stomach.

It took the home side less than four minutes into the game to take the lead when Gary Shanahan skipped down the right channel before putting the ball on the head of the unmarked Ryan Manning at the back post and he just couldn't miss heading past a helpless Craig Hyland from six yards.

The Blues should have levelled matters less than six minutes later when Paudie Quinn sent Darragh Walshe clear on goal

Dazzling Mk2 Display From Breen Ends In Mechanical Despair

Super 2000 World Rally Champion Craig Breen will look back on this year's 'Rally of the Lakes' and say, "what could have been." The Waterford driver out for his first appearance on home soil in 2013 had a scintillating performance in his rally cut prematurely short with engine failure as the event resumed for day two Sunday.

Breen, driving the Suirway Forklifts/Farm Machinery backed Mk2 Escort had climbed to 6th overall and held a 19.7 second lead in the national category (2 Wheel Drive Section) of the rally after a dominating drive over the Saturday day one stages but his rally ended four km's into the opening Sunday morning Molls Gap test . A very disappointed Breen said afterwards, "I'm totally gutted. We were absolutely delighted with our position going into day two

Inis Meain impresses at Limerick

The Listed Martin Molony Stakes was the main event at Limerick on Sunday and it produced an impressive winner in the shape of the Denis Hogan-trained Inis Meain. The progressive six-year-old took charge over two furlongs out and ground out an authoritative 4 1⁄4 lengths victory under Danny Mullins. The pick of the remainder of the action was the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden and it saw the Aidan O'Brien-trained Expedition make a hard-fought winning debut by a neck under Seamie Heffernan.

Drama At Sligo

Despite having only three runners, the opening the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Hurdle was considered by many to be the most intriguing race on Sunday's card at Sligo and it provided a remarkably dramatic spectacle. The drama started almost immediately, as the second favourite Torn Asunder ran off the first bend and

Kelly's Irish record in Italy

A new Irish record of 5,442 points in Heptathlon was set by Kelly Proper of Ferrybank AC. last week. Kelly broke her club mate Mairead Murphy's record of 4399 set in May 2012 while competing in the Multistars in Florence, Italy on the 2nd and 3rd of May. Proper began the gruelling two day competition with a sixth place finish in the 100m hurdles recording a time of 14.80. This earned her a score of 868 points, a very solid start to the competition. The high jump came next and Kelly cleared a height of 1.66m to earn herself 806 points. In the shot putt she threw a distance of 10.40 m which converted to 556 points. The 200m was the final event on day one

Minor hurlers unfurl the banner

A deserved 4-18 to 1-10 win over Clare in famed Fraher Field Dungarvan on Wednesday last saw the Waterford Minor hurlers claim a Munster semi-final spot against Cork at the end of June. The Deise went into this game on the back of a defeat to reigning champions Tipperary but with the knowledge that even allowing for the fact they never quite hit top gear, they still had the chances to beat the Premier county. Clare on the other hand produced a workmanlike effort to run Cork to a couple of points in their opening game. Indeed the Banner led Cork for much of the sixty minutes and could feel they too had an opportunity to claim the spoils. Because this was a rearranged fixture it was free admission for all and there was a sizable

Blues lose two points

Waterford United 1 - 1 Longford Town

Had Waterford United won on Friday night last they would have closed the gap on Longford to just five points. The fact that Mervue United were held to a draw by Salthill Devon it would also have meant that the Blues would now be in second place, level with Mervue on 14 points but a late goal scored by Longford meant that Paul O'Brien's team had to settle for a point and as a result they remain eight points behind the midlanders. It was a cruel goal to concede, but in fairness the visitors did deserve a point. David O'Sullivan was the player who scored the Longford goal, his 10th of the season . He pounced to knock home a free kick taken by the former Manchester United player Keith Gillespie.

O'Sullivan

Time for a breakJust as the height of Summer begins it seems that it is also the time when our politicians begin their yearly departure from Dail Eireann. While not many professions get as much holiday time as politicians do you have to ask the question whether they merit such long breaks? There are many who would immediately answer that they don't really deserve such long holidays, that they barely seem to spend any time in the Dail at all and after all they are well remunerated for the long hours …
