Clare in the sights

The Waterford Senior Hurlers continued their Munster Championship build up with a challenge game against Limerick at the superbly appointed Mallow GAA Centre on Friday last. With the Clare game now just a week away this was the opportunity for the Deise management team under Michael Ryan to "blow away any cobwebs" that might linger while also give game-time to a number of players trying to establish a place in the starting fifteen. In the event Waterford did come out on top by three points while also running up a very impressive tally of 2-30 to 3-24 to the men from the Treatystone. The current wellbeing of the deise squad was further emphasised by the fact that no fewer than eleven players got themselves on the scoresheet with Ballygunner clubman Pauric Mahoney leading the way with an

Beginners & Underage league

In the week where Iverk produce Carrick Wheelers members, old and new won stages of the An Post Rás, 33 stars of the future signed on for week 2 of the beginners & underage league. This hugely popular league is made possible by the generous sponsorship of Ó Ceallacháin's Bar & Bistro Carrick-on Suir and support of the South Tipperary Sports Partnership.

Three girls and 3 boys took to the line in the 1 lap event. After a closely fought race it was Nathan Huntenberg who just edged out Chloe Hawkins and Conor Hogan for the win. They were followed closely home by Christopher Maher, Aoife Hickey and Caoimhe Flynn. Well done to all.

The 3 lap race was a much more tactical affair and the riders rode hard to make the most of the time handicaps given to

Kerry made to work hard for win

The Waterford Minor Footballers travelled to the Kingdom last week for the Munster Minor Football semi-final and although beaten they came away with heads held high. This was a game where the pundits were giving the Deise very little chance against a Kerry outfit of which much is expected. That said Waterford while playing second fiddle for much of the game did have opportunities and belied their outsider tag with a determined display which saw the visitors make a real game of it. Kerry opened with the wind at their back but two points from Waterford's Conor Gleeson showed that this John Kiely outfit were certainly not going to be rolled over. The Kingdom, so called aristocrats of football got a huge breakthrough at midway of the half when the very impressive Jack Sauvage

Paul O'Brien steps down as Blues crash to Wexford

waterford united 0 - 1 Wexford youths

Waterford United's dismal season took another turn for the worse on Friday night last when they lost for a second time to Wexford Youths this season. The previous week they turned in a dreadful display away to Mervue United and supporters were hoping that the team would bounce back from that defeat but sadly this latest outing was every bit as bad. In fact in many ways it was even worse.

To date a total of nine goals have been scored by the current team and on this occasion they did not even trouble the visiting goalkeeper once. Were it not for some fine saves by Craig Hyland and an excellent display by central defender Gavin Kavanagh the final score could very easily have run into a

Blues Accept Manager's Resignation

As you'll have read elsewhere in this issue, Waterford United announced last Saturday that it had accepted the resignation of manager Paul O'Brien, tendered just prior to what was a disappointing and lacklustre defeat to Wexford Youths on Friday night. The resignation brought to an end almost two years at the helm for O'Brien, the highlight of which, without doubt, was the run to the play-offs last season, going so agonisingly close to promotion, but just coming up short at the final hurdle. All at the club wish to thank Paul for five years of hard work and dedication to the cause, as manager, first team coach, and in charge of the U20s, and wish him well whatever path his future career may take. The Blues also stated that they envisage a role for Paul within the

Joey Hannon Triathlon

Six WTC members travelled to the University of Limerick campus on Sunday 28th April to compete in Limerick Triathlon Clubs annual sprint and olympic distance triathlons. It was a pool based triathlon with some 600 competitors competing for valuable National Series points. Shane Scadding and Anne Hennebry competed in the olympic distance, completing 30 lengths of the pool (1,500m), a 40km bike leg, finished off with a 10km run. Despite swimming an extra two lengths (not his fault) and falling off his bike in transition, Shane finished in 2:02:48 in 10th place overall and won his age group (again!). Anne also had an excellent race and finished in 2:42.36, also winning her age group. In the sprint distance race (Swim 750m, Bike 20km, run 5km) Kieran Jackson finished 3rd overall in 1:00:58. Other WTC members who finished an

  • A Wonderful Harvest

Even though the weather Gods didn’t exactly play ball over the weekend it doesn’t take away from the fact that this years Waterford Harvest Festival was yet again another wonderful success. It was great to see the streets of the centre of the city so beautifully and thoughtfully decked out. The various food stalls offering tastes from all over were great to wander around. The information and background that each of the stall holders were able to give on the provenance of their food was really interesting an …
