Disappointing Weekend

On a dismal GAA weekend when most of the results went against us I guess, the only bright spot for Waterford was the victory of the Junior Footballers over Tipperary in Killarney on a 1-13 to 0-15 scoreline on Saturday evening last. Why Munster Council in it's wisdom decided to bring both Waterford and Tipperary to the Kingdom is totally beyond me. They may give a double header Senior/Junior as the reason but surely there was a more convenient venue for both counties bearing in mind the cost involved. There was never going to be a couple of thousand extra souls travel to lift the attendance. Under present day circumstances... it just beats me.

Ten man Super Blues rock Athlone

Athlone town 0 - 1 waterford united

Athlone Town have been trying to beat Waterford United on their home patch since 2000 but they just simply cannot match the Blues no matter how hard they try. On Friday night last in Athlone, Waterford were reduced to ten player after only 35 minutes but still the hosts could not get the better of a team who were managed on this occasion by David Breen.

Paul Quilty scored the only goal of an entertaining match on what was a glorious evening in the midlands. The Blues goalkeeper Craig Hyland produced a brilliant save from Philly Gorman on 7 minutes and Hyland displayed his class once again on 24 minutes when he turned away a great effort from Ian Sweeney.

The Blues did launch an attack after 28 minutes when Jack

Thirteen of the forty-four starters made it into the jump-off, with six managing a double clear round and none were faster than record winning national Grand Prix champion Francis Connors, who was suitably pleased with his days work,

"I'm delighted with how the mare (Uskerty Diamond Lady) went today, she has been knocking on the door for a while and today it was her turn. The jump off ended up very fast, Darragh Ryan was especially quick with Miss Souri. I

Fifteen WTC members made the long trek down to Valentia Island in Kerry last weekend to compete in the National Series sprint distance triathlon. This normally involves a 750 metre open swim from the mainland to the island followed by a 20km cycle and a 5km run on the island. Unfortunately due to high winds and low temperatures the swim was cancelled and replaced with a 3km run. Although a lot of people weren't very happy that the triathlon was changed to a duathlon, the decision was made on safety grounds and everyone respected the officials' decision. The first 3km run was started in five separate waves so athletes wouldn't know their final position until the end of the race.

The first run was a flat out and back with some very quick times for the 3km. Ned Power and Chris

All About Ya cruised to victory

Topping the menu of racing on offer last Saturday night was the final of the Fundraising Meetings A2 Stake. Mooncoin based trainer Peter Cronin dominated this competition from the outset and duly sent out the first two home in the final. After an impressive semi-final performance the Willie Rigney owned All About Ya (Kinloch Brae-Bluebell Fantasy) was despatched as the 2/5 hot pot and did not disappoint cruising to a smooth success in an excellent 28.45. While Chapel St Flyer trapped in front from trap five All About Ya eased his way into a first bend lead. It was plain sailing for the jolly thereafter as he cruised to a facile five lengths win over kennel mate Ille Desire.

  • A Wonderful Harvest

Even though the weather Gods didn’t exactly play ball over the weekend it doesn’t take away from the fact that this years Waterford Harvest Festival was yet again another wonderful success. It was great to see the streets of the centre of the city so beautifully and thoughtfully decked out. The various food stalls offering tastes from all over were great to wander around. The information and background that each of the stall holders were able to give on the provenance of their food was really interesting an …
