Last dirty half dozen for Waterford United

Waterford United and Longford Town meet this Friday night at the RSC as the business end of the season really begins to kick in. All teams in the First Division have just six games left to play in the regulation league and at the present time Athlone Town are five points clear of both the Blues and Longford. Waterford are in fact currently in third position on goal difference behind Longford. Both clubs have 38 points compared to Athlone's 43.

By common consent Waterford United would have to win all of their six remaining games to have a chance of winning the league, but at this stage of the season rogue results often occur and it would be foolish to rule out that possibility happening again during the coming weeks.

Waterford played Longford away on March

St Patrick's Athletic 6 Waterford United 3

The Waterford United Under 19 Elite League team lost heavily to St Patrick's Athletic in Richmond Pak on Sunday afternoon last. They won their first game against Salthill Devon but unfortunately they came out on the wrong side of the result on this occasion.

After starting brightly, it was midfielder Andy O'Connor that could have gave his side the lead inside the opening couple of minutes but he failed to take his opportunity before the visitors to Richmond Park struck for the lead goal on 19 minutes O'Connor turned provider for Niall McCabe, who did superbly well inside the penalty area to slip the ball past the St Patrick's Athletic netminder to notch his third goal of the season after scoring a brace in the opening game of the season against Salthill Devon

Hawkeye ticket up for Waterford Minor hurlers will face Galway in the All- Ireland final on Sunday, 8th September, following the Tribesmen's win over a gallant Limerick at Croke Park on Sunday last after twenty minutes of extra time. However, the big discussion point at the end was the intervention of Hawkeye early in the game which disallowed - what looked like- a legitimate Limerick point. Going to print, no one, and that includes those charged with the responsibility in Croke Park, seems certain as to who made the call to refer to technology. The referee and the umpires seemed to agree at first sight that it was a point and it appeared Galway had also accepted the legitimacy of the score. The Galway goalkeeper certainly believed it was a point as did the thousands of Limerick fans behind the

The Golf Classic, which is being organised to raise funds to help with the training costs of the various county teams from minor to senior in both hurling and football, was launched on Monday evening last at the Gold Coast by Joanne Cantwell of RTE Sports. The classic will take place over 5 days from Wednesday 28th August to Sunday 1st September. The cost per team of four is E180 and this included a meal in the Gold Coast. The format is two scores to count at all holes.

Launching the classic Joanne spoke about the problems with financing county training and the strains it was putting on county boards. Playing inter- county hurling and football now requires our players to trained at the optimal level and specialised training costs money. She was delighted to be asked to launch the classic
