Waterford Philosophical Society

Waterford Philosophical Society present a Stand Alone Lecture - Tristram Shandy at 7:30 pm, Monday 5th March, at Waterford Cheshire, John’s Hill, Waterford.

Born in Clonmel in 1713, Laurence Sterne worked as an Anglican clergyman. His sermons and literary works achieved notoriety, yet his revolutionary methods as a novelist ensured his enduring fame. As this lecture will show, Tristram Shandy exemplifies Sterne's highly sophisticated authorial methods and his fascinating engagement with philosophical thought. It will also consider how Tristram Shandy is enriched by Sterne’s talents as a satirist, insofar as the novel is permeated by a bitingly irreverent approach to the world of learning. In the course of this talk close textual readings will be consistently contextualized in relation to Sterne's political and religious views.

No prior knowledge of this topic is required. For further information, please visit our Facebook page (Philosophia Waterford) or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
