Waterford Today weekly horoscopes
Wednesday 18th September - Tuesday 24th October
Aries 21st March-21st April
The Sun opposing Uranus in Aries could have you second-guessing a commitment you’ve already made. Usually rock-solid and dependable, the urge to slip out a side door may be strong, but ultimately it’s just not the Aries way. It could be that this commitment or agreement was made as some kind of compromise and maybe you gave more leeway than you feel you should have. It’s a tough call, but it’s yours to make.
Taurus 22nd April-21st May
Pressure could be building in a work situation where it’s becoming clear that one member of the team is not pulling their weight and everyone else is doing double-time to compensate. It’s frustrating as hell but try not to lose your cool. If it’s not your job to address the issue, hold your whist and leave to the person who’s responsibility it is. Watch out for over indulgences of the food and drink variety, especially the latter!
Gemini 22nd May-21st June
Listen to your body when it whispers, or you’ll have no choice but to hear it when it screams. If you’ve been overdoing it on diet and exercise or just working too hard and burning the candle at both ends, takes steps to redress the situation or you could find yourself in the doctor’s office. Balance is the key here, and having too many plates spinning in the air at once is sure you knock you off yours.
Cancer 22nd June-22nd July
This is a great time to nurture yourself and you loved ones Cancer. Forego the rushing around and grabbing food on the go for a quiet night in with some home cooked goodness. If you’re brave enough, try to unplug the whole family for an evening, no phones, no computers, no TV, no facebook, twitter or instagram. Get back to simplicity with books or board games.
Leo 23rd July-23rd August
Like our Cancerian friends, its time for Leos to concentrate on some self-care. You may be feeling a bit depleted, or low on energy reserves, or maybe you’re processing some deep-seated and quite heavy emotions. This can be tough going and all too easily avoided amongst the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But it’s every bit as important as every other type of work you do, so whether it’s talking it out or writing it down, give yourself the time to do it.
Virgo 24th August-23rd September
As busy as your work life is, don’t forget to treat your special someone, well, special and don’t forget that as interesting as your life is, they might have things they’d like to discuss too. Single? Don’t let others push you into anything you’re not ready for, as well meaning as they may be. Take your time when getting to know new people, and be advised that when it comes to online dating, the profile and the actual person can vary massively!
Libra 24th September-23rd October
The same old same old just won’t cut it for you anymore Libra, and you’re looking to make sweeping changes in some areas of your life, whether that’s your job, your social circle or your wardrobe, it’s time to try something new. Expect the passion factor to increase significantly with your special someone as they’re loving your hutzpah and confidence. If you’re single, you’ll notice you’re turning a few heads when you’re out and about.
Scorpio 24th October-22nd November
The approach of the Libra new moon gives you a great opportunity to work on a few issues on which you know you need closure. These are often deep seated fears and worries that stretch back as far as we can recall and may involve childhood trauma or mother/father issues. This new moon brings with it powerful healing energy so even if you haven’t been able to close the door on something before, now it just might happen.
Sagittarius 23rd November-21st December
You may find your name has been put forward for a new project at work and you could have a hard time figuring out whether you’re pleased or not about it. Needless to say, your skills have been noted and it’s a mark of confidence in your abilities that you’ve been considered for the job. Whether you accept it or not, is totally up to you. The sun in your twelfth house may result in some pretty ‘out there’ dreams.
Capricorn 22nd December-20th January
It’s all about who you know this week Capricorn, so if there’s something you’re trying to get off the ground, get out and about and mingle. Browse through your contacts list and don’t be afraid to ask for favours or referrals or introductions to people you think might be interested in your product or skills. An unconventional character could become an unexpected ally.
Aquarius 21st January-19th February
You may be trying make big plans about your future but finding that work is getting in the way. You could find yourself busier than ever and struggling to find a minute to put into action all these great ideas you’re having. Persevere Aquarius, bold risks taken now require confidence and bravery but will ultimately pay huge dividends. Don’t allow self doubt to stop you.
Pisces 20th February-20th March
You could find yourself this week, searching for deeper meanings, on life and death, love and loss, and your own personal experience of it all. And there are so many different beliefs about all of it, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself interested in heretofore untouched books on everything from the religious and spiritual to the paranormal and universal. It could make for a few interesting conversations and a few raised eyebrows too.
The Irish Cancer Society is calling on all women in Waterford to become aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer during breast cancer awareness month this October. The five year survival rate for breast cancer patients in Ireland is currently at 85% and the Society says early detection of the disease is a key factor in this.
Early detection greatly increases the chances for successful treatment and according to National Cancer Registry of Ireland (NCRI) statistics most breast cancers in Ireland are detected at an early stage. Over 40 per cent of invasive breast cancers are diagnosed at Stage two, while over 30 per cent are diagnosed at Stage one.
Breast cancer is the most common form of invasive cancer affecting women in Ireland. The vast majority of women diagnosed with breast cancer are aged 50 to 64 (41 per cent), but younger women are also affected, with 23 per cent of diagnoses occurring in women under 50.
The Society is urging all women in Waterford to be aware of the following signs and symptoms of breast cancer:
- A change in size or shape such as one breast becoming larger than the other
- A change in the skin such as puckering or dimpling (like orange peel) or redness
- A change in the direction or shape of your nipple, especially if it sinks into your breast or becomes irregular in shape
- An unusual discharge (liquid) from one or both of your nipples
- A change on or around the nipple such as a rash or flaky or crusted skin
- Swelling in your armpit or around your collarbone
- A lump or thickening in your breast
- Constant pain in one part of your breast or armpit
Naomi Fitzgibbon, Cancer Nurseline Manager, Irish Cancer Society said, "It is important that every woman is breast aware. This means knowing what is normal for you so that if any unusual change occurs, you will recognise it. The sooner you notice a change the better, because if cancer is found early, treatment is more likely to be successful. Get into the habit of looking at and feeling your breasts regularly, a good time to do this is in the shower or bath. If you notice something abnormal for you talk to your doctor without delay. Remember most changes won’t turn out to be breast cancer. But if they are, the sooner this is diagnosed the more effective treatment will be.”
There are also a number of ways to reduce your risk of breast cancer, including being a healthy weight, being active for 30 minutes a day at least five days a week, limiting alcohol intake, breastfeeding your baby, not smoking and by attending Breastcheck when called. All women aged 50 to 69 are invited to have a free mammogram every two years, see http://www.breastcheck.ie for more info.
To speak to a Cancer Nurse on any aspect of breast cancer contact the Cancer Nurseline on Freephone 1800 200 700, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or drop into one of 13 Daffodil Centres in hospitals nationwide.
The Irish Cancer Society relies almost entirely on voluntary donations made by the public and companies to fund free services for breast cancer patients. Money raised through Cups against cancer coffee mornings will help provide advice and support to breast cancer patients in Waterford, when they need it most, through the Freephone Cancer Nurseline and 13 Daffodil Centres around the country. These services provide support to women when they are looking for answers or just need to turn to someone who understands their diagnosis. It will also funds transportation for chemotherapy patients through the Volunteer Driver Service which is vital for women who have no other way of getting to lifesaving treatment, and nursing care at home for end of life patients through the Night Nursing Service.
Members of the public in Waterford can help by hosting a fundraising Cups against cancer coffee morning this October. For more information see http://www.cancer.ie/cupsagainstcancer
