Under-Nourished Patients More Likely To Die, Yet Problem Still Overlooked Or Ignored – Conference Told

Patient Groups & International Nutrition Experts Call on Irish Government to take action to prevent old and chronically ill becoming malnourished

Delegates attending a conference in Dublin last week, organised under the auspices of European Presidency, were told that many under-nourished patients within the Irish healthcare system continue to be overlooked and are not receiving adequate nutritional care, despite being three times more likely to develop infections and at least twice as likely to die as normally nourished patients with a similar diagnosis.

The comments were made at the launch of a call to action document, Every Patient Deserves Good Nutritional Care, which outlines five key recommendations designed to eliminate avoidable malnutrition in older and chronically sick patients - a problem that affects as many as 140,000 Irish

Under certain circumstances special arrangements can be made to facilitate a student with migraine when taking state examinations. The student should provide a letter from their GP/neurologist to the school stating that they suffer from migraine. The school may then authorize the following:

Granting breaks or rest periods in each examination session that are warranted by the physical or medical condition of the candidate. Under this type of arrangement the time taken for:

Rest or as a break may be compensated for at the close of each examination period to a maximum of 20 minutes.

Taking of medicine, food or drinks into the examination centre where this is required for medical reasons.

Allowing the candidate to move within the centre.

Use of a special desk or chair used in the classroom.

Use of low vision aids used normally in the classroom.

Volunteer lifeboat crew at Tramore RNLI were called out last Wednesday morning to help assist a whale which had become tangled up in lobster pots. Working alongside an inshore fishing vessel, the two crews worked together to free the mammal.

The lifeboat was launched around 11.30am after a local fishing vessel reported what they believed to be a whale caught up in lobster pots a quarter of a mile out from shore. When the lifeboat arrived on scene they had to wait some minutes for the creature to surface.

On closer inspection it was discovered that the rope holding some lobster pots together had become snagged in the mammal's mouth and it was turning around in the water repeatedly, attempting to free itself.

The lifeboat worked alongside the inshore fishing vessel, which had an onboard winch, to try and cut the rope free

Biblical perspectives for living

I think if you were to conduct a survey and ask people what God is like, the number one characteristic would be that God is love. And this is indeed a wonderful, biblical truth. The Apostle John wrote: "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love" (1 John 4:7-8).

This doctrine deserves to be celebrated but we need to make sure we know what it means. I fear many have a sentimentalised view of love not in keeping with biblical revelation, but John himself

provides us with a clear explanation: "This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning

J1 visa threat "unfair and unworkable"

Ireland South MEP Sean Kelly has vowed to lobby strongly against a US Senate proposal which he warns would effectively "wipe out" the popular J1 visa.

The Fine Gael MEP was responding to a clause in the immigration reform bill currently going through the US Senate, calling for a €500 charge to be imposed on the popular J1 visa. The restriction would mean that Irish and European students would not be granted the visa unless a potential employer in the States agreed to pay the sponsorship fee.

Mr Kelly described the proposal as "unfair and unworkable" and pledged to raise the issue at the Transatlantic Legislators' Dialogue, which takes place in Dublin at the end of May. The annual meeting of US and EU parliamentarians aims to improve the political discourse between legislators in both continents.

"I would

Letters to the Editor

Paradise papersOne of the most surprising things about the release of the copious amounts of tax details of some of the richest people on the planet wasn't the names of the people involved but the fact that three of them were actors from Mrs. Brown's Boys. Between them the three had accounts nearing 2 million euros in off-shore accounts and let's face it, these people aren't exactly Robert De Niros or Meryl Streeps but three bog standard, and that's putting it mildly, actors, from a middling comedy serie …
