Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance

Question: My daughter will be 4 years old in August. Can I claim the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance for her?

Answer: As she will be 4 years old before 30 September 2013, you may be eligible for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BTSCFA) for her. She does not have to be at school or pre-school.

You must be getting certain social welfare payments or taking part in training, employment or adult education schemes. In general, you must be getting an Increase for a Qualified Child (IQC) with your payment. Also, your total family income must be below a certain level for your family size.

The allowance is €100 for eligible children aged 4-11 and €200 for those aged 12-22. The scheme is open from 1 June to 30 September each year.

Q. When you look at the ABC's of beer, how deep into the dictionary might brew terminology reach?

A. No doubt "alcohol," "ethanol," and "hops" readily come to mind. More obscure are "Brussels lace" (the foam adhering to the inside of the glass and considered by some to be a sign of high-quality beer) and "cerevisaphile" (a beer expert, incorporating the Latin name of the Roma goddess of agriculture, Ceres, and "vis" meaning strength) says Christian Millman in "20 Things You Didn't Know About Beer" in "Discover" magazine. But a real reach worth mentioning - and worth drinking to - is "zymurgy," or "the study and practice of yeast fermentation in brewing." Even more fun is the fact that this particular "z" word is also the last word in many dictionaries, as well as in

"Dear John, I "adopted" a female Pointer three months ago. She is about six years old and was formerly used as a gundog and although she was well treated, she was kept in a kennels with other dogs and not treated as a pet. She is very affectionate and, as my work is based outdoors, I bring her everywhere with me. In the last few weeks, I have left her with my parents when I have had to go away for a few days

Biblical perspectives for living

Aiden W. Tozer has had a profound effect on many through his books and sermons. He was born in 1897 and raised in rural western Pennsylvania. In 1912, he and his family moved to Akron, Ohio to work at the new B. F. Goodrich tire company. It was there that in 1915 he heard a street preacher quoting the words of Jesus,

"Come unto Me, all ye that are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).

He would later say, "I became greatly disturbed, for I began to feel and sense and acknowledge God’s gracious

Presence. I heard His Voice - ever so faintly. I discerned that there was a Light - ever so dimly."

Just a few days later, he again heard another street preacher who said, "If you do not know

"Taste Waterford" sees Bodega and La Boheme restaurants combine their passion for good food, fresh local produce and Waterford heritage. Taking place every Wednesday, the evening consists of a three course meal in one restaurant, a guided tour through Waterford city centre, followed by a further three course feast of flavour in the second restaurant.

The initiative is the brainchild of Christine Theze of La Boheme and Cormac Cronin of Bodega, who have worked together on several projects in the past.

According to Christine, the idea came from their mutual love of local produce. "When it comes to locally sourced produce Cormac and I share the same philosophy. In Waterford and the South East we are blessed with a wonderful selection of producers supplying the highest calibre of seafood, meat, fruit, vegetables, dairy and breads."

"These local producers feature prominently on both restaurant’s

HealthCatastropheMary Harney, when she was Minister for Health, many years ago, declared that 300 people on trolleys in hospital corridors was a 'health crisis'. Now here we are in 2018 and we have nearly twice that number of people on trolleys within a hospital system that barely seems able to cope. The sad and infuriating thing about this, is that this is a yearly occurence where every winter ,just as the New Year is coming in, we find ourselves in the same position - every year. The Gove …
