Checkmate at Garter Lane

DIRECTED by Patrick Kerwick, above, with choreography by Izzy Carr and sound and lighting by Craig Cunningham, Chess the Musical comes to Garter Lane this March, courtesy of Deise Musical Society.

The story of a love triangle between two chess grandmasters - one American, one

Russian - and a woman serving as a manager to one of the players but falling in love with the other was written by Abba Legends Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Elton John’s lyricist Tim Rice.

The West End production of the show begins with the American World Champion, Frederick "Freddie" Trumper arriving with his second, Florence Vassy, who wants him to tone down his behaviour. Trumper is opposed by Russian challenger Anatoly Sergievsky. After a series of victories for Anatoly, Florence leaves Freddie, and he resigns from the match. Anatoly wins the match, then seeks asylum in England with the help of Florence, the two have fallen for each other. One year later, Anatoly defends his title against a Soviet opponent. The match takes place in Bangkok, and Freddie is on hand for the match.

Chess has one of the greatest musical theatre scores of all time including One Night in Bangkok, Pity The Child, Anthem, You And I and, of course, I Know Him So Well, which became a number one hit for Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson.

See it in Garter Lane from March 1 - 3.

Tickets are €19/?16 from http://www.garterlane.ie or from the box office on 051-855 038
