John Halligan T.D. has paid tribute to the late Captain Dara Fitzpatrick, following this morning’s rescue helicopter crash.
Describing how he got to know Dara very well during her years at the Waterford Coast Guard base, after she led a delegation from Rescue 117 to a reception at City Hall whilst he was Mayor, Minister Halligan said the young mother was ‘an inspiration’:
“I later had the pleasure of Dara bringing me on a tour of the Waterford coastline in the rescue helicopter. What struck you from the first moment you were in her company was how utterly dedicated she was, both to her own work and also to water safety. Dara was an inspiration to the many school children to whom she gave safety talks, particularly young girls who were considering a career in the industry. My deepest condolences to her family, friends and her colleagues at the Irish Coast Guard, she is a great loss and will be sorely missed.”
