You have to wonder at the thinking behind Labour T.D. Alan Kelly's reasoning behind him making a tilt at the leadership of his party.

Labour has undergone enough troubles since the last election without there being more brought upon itself from within. The Left in Ireland has traditionally been a small, but sometimes pivotal, force. And for most of that time it has been the preserve of the Labour Party. That however is no longer the case.

Sinn Fein has established itself as a growing power on the left and it continues to grow in size.

You might think that Labour has enough going on trying to pick itself up from it's disasterous showing at the last election but it doesn't seem to be making much headway with the electorate. It certainly doesn't have many stellar performers in the Dail and when you have got one of it's strongest members caught up in a leadership battle you have to really wonder what is going on with the party.
