Sinn Fein has come a long way in it's history and this weekend saw another major move as it elected it's first new leader in over 34 years when Mary Lou McDonald took over the position vacated by Gerry Adams as leader of the party. Considered one of the strongest performers in the Dail and a stalwart in her party it is no surprise that there were no other contenders for the position when her name went forward although one of the first things she did in her acceptance speech was to say that Sinn Fein was nothing more or less than a democratic political party. There are many challenges ahead for Sinn Fein not least in the North so Mary Lou McDonald will have to, literally, hit the ground running. As she said the war is over but the peace has still to be won.
