While Christmas can be an insular time of year where people only think of their own family and friends it has to be said that for many others it is a lonely and cold time of the year. And that is why is always important to remember others at this time of year. It is somewhat easy to help those who are in obvious distress but you really have to put your mind to remembering that not all of those who are in need and need our help at this time of the year are rough sleepers or are those who are begging on the streets. There are many people who will be desperately lonely at this time of the year and it is only compounded by the bonhomie that goes with the festive season. So we all really need to remember to give to charities or give some of our time and attention to others out there who won't be having such a great Christmas this year.

    HealthCatastropheMary Harney, when she was Minister for Health, many years ago, declared that 300 people on trolleys in hospital corridors was a 'health crisis'. Now here we are in 2018 and we have nearly twice that number of people on trolleys within a hospital system that barely seems able to cope.
